What to Expect on Your First Visit
We’re so glad you’ve decided to join us!
We hope you will feel this way on your first visit the moment you enter the forest green doors of Pilgrim Church on Washington Street in Duxbury, MA.
The first time you visit Pilgrim Church, you will be greeted inside the front doors by a couple of church members who will show you the way up the stairs into the sanctuary where our Sunday morning services are held. Please let the greeters know it’s your first time attending.
Once in the sanctuary, our usher will hand you an “order of worship” bulletin that will outline the day’s service. In addition one of our Deacons will offer to answer any questions you may have about the church or the denomination with which it is affiliated – the United Church of Christ. If time allows, the Deacon may offer to introduce you to one of our pastors, the Rev. Bill Ferguson, our Senior Minister, or the Rev. John Brink, our minister of visitation.
About Our Front and Side Entrances
While most visitors come in through the front doors, there is a side entrance which is handicap accessible. If you go to the side door, there is an elevator that serves all floors of the church. The sanctuary, where Sunday services are held, is on the second floor. Turn right when you get off the elevator, and then turn left where you will be met by a greeter who will hand offer you an order of worship.
Worship Services
Our Sunday Worship, which generally lasts about an hour, begins with the pastor welcoming everyone who is in attendance along with some general announcements. At this time, the pastor will invite visitors to sign a “pew register” (one of the black books on either side of the pew) for you to share basic contact information so we can reach out to you after your visit. There is no obligation to do so.
Visiting with children?
Most worship services begin with a children’s sermon, after which children leave the sanctuary to participate in Sunday School. Children are always welcome to remain in the sanctuary with their parents if so desired. Don’t worry if your youngsters are rambunctious. The sound of children is the sign of a healthy church.
Nursery care is provided for infants up to 3 years of age. Please ask the greeters, an usher or a Deacon to direct you to the church school or nursery, if you so desire.
You can learn more about our Christian Education and Youth Programs right here on our website. If you plan to have children attend church school, it may help to arrive a few minutes early if your child will benefit from exploring the church school environment. We also ask that families complete a Youth Registration Form which you may do in person, or online in advance of your visit.
Fellowship
Please join us immediately following Worship for fellowship, coffee, and snacks. It’s a wonderful time to ask questions and get to know members of the church.
Parking
While there is plenty of parking in the church lot, overflow parking is available both across the street at the former Battelle property and next door at the Winsor House Inn.
“No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.”
